Benefits of Unplugging: Not What You Think!
Are you the kind of leader that stays plugged into work while on vacation?
If so, I am not here to judge whether that is good or bad. I will leave that to you and your traveling companions to judge how well it is serving you and your relationships.
Instead, I would like to highlight an opportunity you may be missing out on….
Testing the Strength of your Leadership
When a leader can be absent for a week or even longer, and the business continues to operate smoothly without disruptions, it demonstrates their effective leadership in empowering and enabling their team to excel independently. This absence highlights the leader’s ability to cultivate a capable and empowered team and build a culture of trust and collaboration.
Such leadership is characterized by the belief that success lies in enabling others to rise to the occasion, rather than being indispensable themselves.
How confident are you that this describes you and your team?
➡ If it is high, consider putting it to the test, if the time is right. What might you gain from it? What might you give up if you don’t?
➡ Perhaps your confidence is low and this can only be an aspiration for you right now. Consider the benefits for you, the team members, and the organization if it were so. And decide whether it is an aspiration worth pursuing.
It is ultimately up to you to decide whether this is an opportunity worth pursuing and if so, with what timing. Simply ‘growing your confidence that you could’ will certainly yield a multitude of benefits including enhancements in empowerment, independence, trust, confidence, morale, innovation, problem-solving and decision-making. You might just find that you have been doing more than you need to, which frees you up to do more of what you could be doing.
